Sarah Jean Williams is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and writer reframing the fantasy genre to center overlooked voices — particularly Black women. Her work blends surrealism and intimacy, exploring themes of memory, grief, and identity through an Afro-Gothic lens. A graduate of NYU Tisch and alum of Ghetto Film School, she’s directed films with support from Dolby, Netflix, Neutrogena, and the Huntington Museum. Her latest short, a surreal tale of sisterhood and the afterlife, was awarded a Dolby Institute grant and mentorship from the Daniels and Carlos López Estrada. She currently works as a freelance producer at Narrator Inc., collaborating with filmmakers to craft bold, genre-defying stories. In her free time, she’s developing a time-travel coming-of-age feature and performing truly questionable improv.
